shows the Jesperson and Chase Halls will be demolished to make way for potentially the stadium, for sure a road, and a parking structure. I feel this is a mistake, as the buildings are very historic and attractive, and there could have been some way to plan around destroying them I would feel.. .

like have the stands just engulf one corner of the building.

There is also, interestingly, the addition of a new dorm project, between the stadium and the former President's residence. There is also additional dorms built at the top parking lot, south of the newish Cerro Vista dorms, new dorms planned south of the current Yosemite housing, and a refurbishing/ densifying of the long brick dorms on East Perimeter.

i like the idea of "engulfing" the current buildings, utilize them as a unique outward appearance, and possibly utilize them as locker rooms, coaches offices, weight rooms
save a bit of money from destroying them and building new facilities, utilize them and keep the aesthetics, it would be cool to see Jesperson utilized as a tunnel, insert big double doors and a tunnel from which the team would come through, but in order to expand the east side of the stadium the road underneath will have to go, the road just above could be made into a 2 way street on game days if you elminate the parking from that street.

I can remember when the area behind jesperson was tennis courts, you can still see the remnants of that if you go back there, there are office trailers back there and a small lot, i think in order for a lot to be put there jesperson wold have to come down. I am also surprised that they havent put in parking where the old house were as you come in from california kind of adjacent from AGR, could be utilized for more game day parking.

i think a more logical spot for a structure would be between the Business building and Aerospace Engeneering building, this way 1) you dont loose the beautiful sightlines 2) its a little more out of the way but still accessable.

The sad part is that CP is turning into a lot of parking structures and dorm rooms. The creation of Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon hurt the local rental markets. I can remember when Cerro was completed one of the most dense rental agencies had aprroximatly 300 units up for rent far into the fall. I think we have adequate on campus living, the surrounding area also has plenty of off campus residents for rent.

Poly should have looked for a better place for the stadium before they decided to expand the west bleachers. They are already sewn in because of the railroad tracks. Why not turn the area out by the baseball/softball fields into a mini-sports complex? That would have made the most sense, but also would have cost more money to build everything.

While the area is very compact, I think that adds to the excitement. The location is also at the end of California Blvd, and near a lot of student housing. I don't think the stadium setting would be as exciting further away from the heart of campus out in the boondocks.

Oh, and here is the one and only image from an official source I have ever seen:

I don't know why I haven't showed this yet, probably because it was pulled from the internet about a year ago, and appears to be just a preliminary plan - as the west side isn't even built yet.

The thing about the image is, the stadium pictured is about 17,500 not 22,000.

1. Has the audacity to criticize our choice of stadium location. Meanwhile, choice of new location for Aggie Stadium nearly resulted in several deaths by heat exhaustion.

2. Suggests that instead of building stadium on historic site with character and ambiance, we should have built in the middle of a ag field. Which makes sense, given that Aggie Stadium has all the character of a big concrete hole in the ground (appropriate, given that it is, indeed, a big concrete hole in the ground).

Davis' field is Ok.. kind of hole-ish, but no Spanos/Mustang as far as setting goes.

It wasn't the location of the stadium that caused the heat stroke, it is because the stadium is built below ground level. I never said that Aggie Stadium is perfect by any means, and I am not criticizing your stadium at all. I was there last year and I like the new press box, which I was in. I am just saying that it is a tough place to really build out a stadium because it is closed in by roads, building and train tracks, which is evident by the university talking about demolishing buildings if they want to expand Spanos.

I am really curious what the deal is with the stadium at this point. I know they were taking bids in 2007, so something's up. They wanted estimates on 3 different configurations, 12,000, 17,000, and 22,000, so it looks like they might be building it in phases. It's just too bad nobody from the university wants to really tell us anything. The process in general is not very transparent, as we saw with the west side expansion, where the design we were shown for so long turned out to look completely different than what we got in the end.

Exactly! Why does this have to be such a secret. This thing is going to have to be built through donations. Wouldn't it be a good idea to start building excitement about it with the alumni. Why not mail out a shiny packet with artist renderings to past donors?

I love the current location of Spanos. I think the railroad adds character. I also like the idea of having to walk through campus to get to the game. Cal Poly will never need a 50K seat stadium. The current space is perfectly adequate for a mid 20K stadium.

.........the way Spanos currently is. Poly can't even get 8 thousand for playoff game and you want to bump it up to 17 or even 22?

They can't even finish a effing swimming pool for Christ sakes. So take away your little hard hat, blue prints, tonka toys and erection

set and be satisfied with what you have because your going to have to look at that piece for a verrrrrrrrry loooooong time!

I'm seriously starting to wonder whether you are a paid troll who's only mission is to irritate people here, or whether you're just a fan of some other school and hate Cal Poly for some reason.

Spanos/Mustang was sold out for a number of games this year (help me out here) NOBODY GETS FULL ON THANKSGIVING. Schools hardly ever sell out when everybody's back home visiting their family. Weber State was unfortunate timing, and Weber isn't a big name around here anyway (probably will be next season, now that people know who they are).

I forget who was talking about this, I think it was Peter, but those are potential fans who are just turned away, and the potential ticket sales are just money down the drain lost from the athletic department every year they drag their feet on expanding.

For sure, we've to go keep the stadium right were it is. I like having a train rumbling by and having the Orfalea looming up the hill. I am saddened about the plan to remove 3 historic Mission revival buildings from the 1930's however.

Spanos also has the tree-lined boulevard leading up to it, not to mention it is close to the center of student housing and other 'conveniences' such as campus bottle being near by, and Cal Poly is a dry campus, so some people who want to unwind like having the city close by.

As you were saying though, we need to get potential donors excited about this project. Some notable donors to the west side were Chris Gocong, Jordan Beck (Atlanta Falcons), David "Doc" Richardson (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Isaac Dixon.

Bulldog stadium as an example: (excerpt from gobulldogs.com)

Featuring a natural grass playing surface and a tree-lined concourse, Bulldog Stadium underwent a two-phase expansion project in 1991 which included the addition of more than 10,000 seats -- increasing the stadium's capacity from 30,000 to 41,031 -- and the construction of 22 sky suites. Other improvements included additional restrooms and concession facilities...

The stadium expansion was a result of the overwhelming fan support the Bulldogs have enjoyed since the early 1980s. In the years just prior to expansion, Fresno State played before crowds well in excess of the official 30,000-seat capacity in 36 of 37 possible home dates. In 1993, one year after expansion was completed, the Bulldogs averaged 39,536 fans during their six home dates.

Original construction of Bulldog Stadium began in June of 1979 following what was then the most successful capital fundraising project ever undertaken in the San Joaquin Valley. Local residents raised in excess of $7 million for the project. No state tax dollars or student fees were used to build the stadium.

Which makes you wonder why the Athletic department isn't just asking the community for donations, for say, I don't know, a 5 year stampede club membership, or something corresponding with their donation.

Adding a multi-story parking structure at the entrance to campus makes sense, but it should be connected to an office / locker room complex behind new endzone seating, similar to what TCU has.

That earlier rendering of an expanded stadium appears to have been drawn by a high school intern who has only sat in bleachers. There is no reason to close off the north endzone that opens to one of the most attractive buildings on campus.

I got bored and started looking at that map of the Cal Poly Master Plan and noticed this new building where the Reasearch and Development hangar is. These buildings now are old hangars that were used to house airplanes back when there was an airstrip over where Bagget is now. Now they are used to house machines that several clubs like Formula SAE use to build their car every year. Anyways in this picture I noticed a new parking structure and a new, rather large building called the "Athletic Field House" In the picture its Building 165. I know that 'field house' is another term for gym so does anybody know if this is the building that is the future Cal Poly gym? it seems like a good location with more than enough parking around, especially when it would be right next to a brand new parking structure, and it would add to the whole 'sports complex' area that has become that whole part of the campus. Any thoughts?

Good eye. I sure hope that is what it is. If it is, I do not know if it will be built any time soon, but it is good to know that there is at least a plan for a new basketball/volleyball/wrestling facility. It also looks like a great place for it.

So.. Rocket Mustang and SloStang.. do you think this 165 will be used for actual games? 'Field house' is pretty general.. so could it possibly be planned for some practice facility. The building has a very large footprint, looks a bit larger than Mott, so it seems big for just a practice facility. It is, as you guys pointed out, also very close to tons of parking. I wouldn't be surprised if the plan was to develop a multi-use arena facility there.

You can see Mr big black 165. P.C.V. is a different plan in this map. The yellow spots are where the rest of the new dorms Baker wants.. the dorm complex near the football stadium looks pretty big, and I bet will be a fun place to live on campus.
