I'm assuming you're not talking about the Blue Devils, but deLancelotti..
It will be interesting to see how many Poly fans we can get showing up in San Jose. If we're going to show our strength in numbers on the road at all, that will be the game. Davis should be pretty well attended, but I hope to see a very visible green section for the Spartans. |

Exposure | #3 | ||
ExpandSpanos wrote:Playing at OH U. will be great exposure for the team, that's the way I'm looking at it. Though playing another WAC team that we have challenged in the past certainly is a great game I love it when our little coastal university no one has heard of makes themselves heard when they get to a venue like this...not Camp Randall but still a good showing for the Mustangs. Will be a very tough game this season with this team in coaching and player transition. I drink your

Looking at the final Sagarin Computer Rankings for the 2008 Season, I find:
Montana, Ranked 62nd Nationally, with a 14-2 record Cal Poly, Ranked 97th, with an 8-3 record San Jose State, Ranked 105th Nationally, with a 6-6 record Ohio University, Ranked 120th Nationally, with a 4-8 record. Of course, I do not know anything about how any of the three opponents have done recruiting, how many of their star players they lost, but I do know that Bobby Hauk at Montana has not stood around saying "I'm good enough", and has restocked again. So on the basis of previous history, I'd have to say that Montana will be the toughest game in 2009. And even though Ohio U and San Jose State are FBS schools, Cal Poly might be favored at San Jose State (the game might be considered even) and will be favored at Ohio U. That said, filling the SJS stadium with Green would go along way toward making Cal Poly Football known in Northern California (as it is in San Diego). |

Yeah, I voted for Montana just because I think they are, year in and year out, the measuring stick for our progress in FCS. The FBS games are great, and of
course I love beating Davis, but the Montana game is basically a playoff game every year we play them.

That game will definitely be packed and crazy because its homecoming. I am most excited for the Spartans, because I will be attending and am trying to talk as many people I can to come along. Does anyone know if there is a chartered bus or fan van for games like Montana? I would go if there was something like that. P.S.: Almost got it Peter, Ohio U: 20,437 -- 1,800 Acres Cal Poly: 19,777 -- 9,678 Acres

coover wrote: If Ellerson was still at the helm and we had not graduated so many key players on offense. San Jose State is beatable but I don't think they will be beatable by the team we will field and that is a comment directed at the coaching staff not the players. When we lost to them 17-7 our defense was stellar...nationally stellar, but our offense was lame duck for the most part with Webb at the helm. Barden was not being utilized (see Webb) and Noble was the lone bright spot of the offense. I do not see a similar situation in this years match up...compared to one we lost by 10 pts against a stiff Spartan defense...Lowry was huge but then again Webb coughed up three INTs (or was it four?) as QB. I think OH. U. is a game that we can win, but our defense will have to come up huge because I do not see our offense scoring much. [edit] OYE! Forgot Cordell Webb was QB for most of that game! You don't think we have a chance at SJSU? Just because Ellerson has left, doesn't mean that the seniors didn't learn from him for 3 years.. I hope
they don't suddenly forget everything they've learned under Ellerson simply because they are under a different coach, at least, I would hope not. I
feel like we have a pretty good chance at a win at San Jose. We still have plenty of key players remaining, and we finally get to see the new talent have a
chance, plus, several potentially exceptional quarterbacks in the wings.
I would say, yes we are at a disadvantage because of the whole Ellerson ditching out on us thing, and the inevitable headaches which accompanied said absence, but as long as Walsh doesn't try and completely re-work what everyone has gotten used to we'll be fine.

This was "we get to kickoff to start the game and to start the second half" game. Somebody, um the captains said "we will kick" rather than "we defer" . Lots of good natured ribbing on our academic rep from the Spartan faithful on that goof-up. Barden caught a 40 yarder by running back 15 yards back to catch a dead duck over Lowery.

I was also at the game and it was Matt taking the majority of the snaps. We were also without Noble that game. More than anything the lack of a running game
is what killed us up in SJSU.

FlyingAnchor wrote: It's kind of funny though, because most of the sports fans in the upper midwest are starting to know where we are (much more so than the rest of the country outside the west coast).. We're always matching up against the Coyotes, Bison, and Jackrabbits.. so we've got the Dakotas covered, then our ongoing and usually close matchups with Montana.. and there are now quite a few Wisconsinites will have a hard time forgetting who we are. The only state in the upper midwest we haven't had the pleasure of visiting is Minnesota.

MustangMan wrote:Agreed. Noble being out really hurt. Also the Spartan's back with the pony tail, Younis Davis? gave the defense fits, way too many three and outs by the offense kept the defense on the field a lot. With 4 maybe 5 CP turnovers, the defense really carried the load for CP. Now if you could take the 2005/6 CP defense with the 2008 offense......... |

ExpandSpanos wrote:Oh, I would say they didn't learn, that was not my point. It is Ellerson's scheming, preparation, and ability to adjust during the game. Case in point is this past years games against SDSU (Dakota version) and WI. Cal Poly was out coaching both of those outfits and you can throw in SDSU Aztecs as well. Also that influence that Ellerson continues to have during the offseason prep and coaching during the year is lost. I am not saying that Walsh is a total loss either. But Ellerson and his staff were simply outstanding when it came to coaching. The other point I was making are adjustments to coaching styles and how the players react to it. There is an adjustment period and that can take all season. I just don't think with the offense that we have that we can win at SJSU. I think it will be another low scoring affair because I do have faith in our defense and that is Walsh's strongest suit in my opinion. But the total offensive core from last year is gone and several good OL. Last season was THE big chance in my opinion and we didn't get it done because the defense simply was not in "sync" or up to the level of the offense, they just weren't there yet, still to young, raw, and needing more experience...and at least one more stellar CB!
