College sports attendance is not impacted by economic downturn, usually the opposite is true. Madden dragged his feet all through the 'good' economic times, when he was making plenty on video game and other royalties (he still is), and never thought about expanding the stadium then, and now 'isn't the time..'' well, the stadium's still selling out last time I checked. It is funny that Madden is saying 'now isn't the time' it seems like it's never a good time for old moneybaggs. Wah wah the stadium isn't big enough, that's why I don't like Cal Poly athletics anymore well then maybe he should chip in a fraction of your royalty cash and get it done already! How hard is it, just sign the check.

I'm sure people want to see the stadium expanded, and its easy to say "I'd give the money if I had it." It's a whole 'nother thing to throw $20-30 million dollars at something, especially right now. well, the stadium's still selling out last time I checked. But it isn't. Careful with the repeating things that have been proven untrue or superfluous, lest we start calling you Peter.

Has anyone noted the population of Santa Maria lately? If I am reading between the lines correctly, I think Madden is saying, "let's see if the past 6-7 years of success are a fluke or not. If the winning continues I'll help you build a new stadium." I wish the interviewer had asked him if he had seen the new Spanos. That might be enough to get him excited and believe that Poly is serious about football. My worry is that Madden is pretty old. He keeps talking about these "windows" of time like he's a 22 year old. Does he really think he can take it with him? We also need to remember that Madden is fun to speculate about, but Poly needs to focus on the tens of thousands of graduates that live within a 4 hour drive of the school and make $100K+ This is the group that will ultimately need to sustain the program. That is why I agree with a few people from the other post that the loss against Wisconsin probably did more for the program than an FCS championship would have. Personally I would rather have the championship, but to the casual fan, losing well to a big name program is more important. These are the types of people that donate cash.

I agree about the thousands of graduates and concentrating on them. The thing is if someone of Madden's stature gives a large gift and becomes the leader of the drive it is more likely we will get the graduates excited enough to open their wallets or reach a little deeper into their wallets. Let's hope both things happen.
