at 8:30 the comments are already pretty funny. It doesnt seem like most of the commenters even read the article. Madden said now isnt the time to be spending
$$ on a new stadium because of the economy and budget concerns in California, yet all the posters on there are sh*tting their pants that he wants a stadium
right now.

I mean.. the school has done little to entice any sort of outside investment.. that's how you get something like this done- $!%% I'll do the fund-raising myself if I have to. College sports attendance is not impacted by economic downturn, usually the opposite is true. Madden dragged his feet all through the 'good' economic times, when he was making plenty on video game and other royalties (he still is), and never thought about expanding the stadium then, and now 'isn't the time..'' well, the stadium's still selling out last time I checked. It is funny that Madden is saying 'now isn't the time' it seems like it's never a good time for old moneybaggs. Wah wah the stadium isn't big enough, that's why I don't like Cal Poly athletics anymore well then maybe he should chip in a fraction of your royalty cash and get it done already! How hard is it, just sign the check. |

It's incredibly hard. I'm sure people want to see the stadium expanded, and its easy to say "I'd give the money if I had it." It's a whole 'nother thing to throw $20-30 million dollars at something, especially right now. well, the stadium's still selling out last time I checked. But it isn't. Careful with the repeating things that have been proven untrue or superfluous, lest we start calling you Peter. |

I didn't say it was selling out every game- but the stadium is in fact, selling out.

It was standing room only for last year's UC Davis game. Don't you think if Poly was playing SJS, SDS and Fresno State the crowds would fill a 22,000
seat stadium. Has anyone noted the population of Santa Maria lately? It's just a half hour south.

there was no game in the central valley, so, this man and his family drove in to watch Poly FB play at Spanos! When it is done right, with all the bells & whistles, watching a game in Spanos Stadium is great! GoPOLY!!! |

I think this article is a really good sign. If I am reading between the lines correctly, I think Madden is saying, "let's see if the past 6-7 years of
success are a fluke or not. If the winning continues I'll help you build a new stadium." I wish the interviewer had asked him if he had seen the new
Spanos. That might be enough to get him excited and believe that Poly is serious about football.
My worry is that Madden is pretty old. He keeps talking about these "windows" of time like he's a 22 year old. Does he really think he can take it with him? We also need to remember that Madden is fun to speculate about, but Poly needs to focus on the tens of thousands of graduates that live within a 4 hour drive of the school and make $100K+ This is the group that will ultimately need to sustain the program. That is why I agree with a few people from the other post that the loss against Wisconsin probably did more for the program than an FCS championship would have. Personally I would rather have the championship, but to the casual fan, losing well to a big name program is more important. These are the types of people that donate cash. |

The thing is if someone of Madden's stature gives a large gift and becomes the leader of the drive it is more likely we will get the graduates excited enough to open their wallets or reach a little deeper into their wallets. Let's hope both things happen. |

At least he is talking about Cal Poly football, that is a start right there, I agree with dprichar and SloStang.

Yeah, the commenters are idiots...but the biggest idiot is Madden. He seems to refuse to accept that college football is a much different landscape today than
it was back in his time. It's almost laughable that the of the 3 schools he holds as standard-bearers -- SJSU, SDSU, and Fresno State -- two of them are
hanging on to football for dear life and one had to completely sacrifice all academic reputation in order to keep its programs afloat. And those "big
stadiums" they have? Two were funded by taxpayer money and are pretty much decrepit, and none of them are ever filled consistently to capacity. Oh, and
don't bother to mention that those 3 schools all operate in metro areas with more than a million people, while SLO has barely 250k.
There is one person to give props to, however; Donovan Aird scored this scoop, as its been 13 years since Madden has commented publicly on Poly. Impressive for a kid just out of college |

I'm just glad somebody - anybody - at the Trib cares. I don't necessarily want to rip on any of the other reporters there, because I don't know the
conditions they're working under, but it sure seems that the Jordan Hasay beat writer at the paper has been the only person banging out copy.

Looks pretty good, but shouldn't the light standards be on the outside? Apart from perhaps not being feasible construction-wise, their current placement
would make those two end upper deck sections partial-view.

The best looking building on your campus is the Business Building named for the guy who started Kinkos, Orfalea. That north end should remain open. The south
end appears to have more space to expand if you're going to keep it a horseshoe.

I think they were -- before the west side expansion. The lighting got upgraded as part of Phase One, and they removed the standards that were in front of the
east side grandstand.
(When I searched for photos to show the above, Google brought me straight to ES's flickr. So good job, ES -- you've cornered the market on Spanos Stadium photos.) |

I'll have to try and get some more with people actually in attendance.. Nick Lucero takes some excellent pictures of the action you should check out if you
haven't already.
and I guess now that the 'parking structure' directly south of the stadium has been scrapped, and the installation of the scoreboard in the north.. it probably would make more sense having stands on the south side- I'm just looking forward to seeing this new scoreboard, and am now counting the days 'till kick off vs. Sac State.

and installing the posts. Were getting very close....

Ya I was riding by the stadium when they were craning out the old scoreboard. Im starting to count the days too until football season starts too. I can't
wait.
BTW when did the parking structure get scrapped? And also, was there ever a set plan on what the phases of the stadium were and which order they were going to be in? |
